Old Hotmail Sign In- How To Access Your Account
Remember Hotmail? It was one of the first, if not the first popular email service available on the Internet.
After being purchased by Microsoft in 1997, Hotmail has continued to evolve into Outlook and remains one of the most popular email services, with more than 500 million users worldwide.
While you may still be using Hotmail as your primary email address, it’s likely that your account has long since been deactivated or simply forgotten about, leaving your email inaccessible and full of personal information you no longer want anyone else to see.
Recover Your Old Hotmail Account
If you have an old Hotmail account that you haven’t used in a while, you may be wondering how to access it. Luckily, the process is relatively simple. Here’s what you need to do
- Open your email and click on the New Mail button on the top left corner of your screen.
- Click on More and then select Options.
- Select Mail Options from the drop down menu and then click on Accounts.
- Scroll through your list of accounts until you find your old one and click on it.
- On the next page, enter your username and password to log in.
- That’s it! You should now be able to view all your old emails! You can also use this process to delete your old account or change its settings.
For example, if you would like to switch over to Gmail, just enter your Gmail login information and hit Delete. When I did this for my old Yahoo account, I was given the option to either set up my new Gmail as a forwarding address or just have my Yahoo mail deleted completely.
It’s good to know that no matter which service you choose, Yahoo will delete your account afterwards so they don’t collect any more personal data.
Just make sure to set up your new email before deleting the old one so there are no hiccups in your inbox!
Create a New Account Using the Old Hotmail Address
You can still access your old Hotmail account by creating a new account using the old address. Here’s how:
- Go to the Microsoft account sign-in page.
- Enter your old Hotmail address in the ‘Email, phone, or Skype’ field.
- Click ‘I forgot my password’.
- Enter the characters you see on the screen and click ‘Next’.
- Select an option for why you’re trying to access your account and enter the security code that appears on the screen into the text box below it.
- Choose whether you want to create a new Microsoft account, keep your existing one or use an existing one and then enter any information required for this type of account (e.g., first name).
- Once you’ve finished entering all necessary information, click ‘Create an account’.
- Fill out your personal information as requested (e.g., last name, birth date) and follow the instructions to complete setup.
- Type in your email address and select a username for your account before clicking ‘Next’.
- Check over the confirmation email that was sent to your old Hotmail address before clicking on the link provided at the bottom of it to verify your email address with Microsoft.
Now, once you’ve completed these steps, your old Hotmail account will be accessible from the Microsoft website.
If you decide to change your login credentials for any reason, simply go back to the site and click I forgot my password again. Next, enter the code shown on the site and then proceed through each step as outlined above.

Link the Old Hotmail Account to Your New Email Client
You can still access your old Hotmail account by linking it to your new email client. This way, you’ll be able to see all of your old emails and contacts in one place. Here’s how to do it .
- Open the Settings app on your phone.
- Select Mail, Contacts, Calendars from the menu that pops up.
- Tap Add Account at the bottom of the list.
- Select Other or Manual Setup under Add Account Type.
- Enter your Gmail address under Username and then enter mail@olddomainname as Password, followed by selecting Next or Continue.
- Make sure IMAP is selected and then tap Finish.
- Enter your Gmail password again when prompted, select Save, and the next time you open your new email client (or go back to this screen), you should see a Mail icon next to the account name for your old Hotmail account.
- Selecting the Mail icon will allow you to read, reply to, delete, archive, and manage your old emails.
- The contact list will also be synced so if you have any contacts saved in Hotmail that aren’t in Gmail yet they will show up on both accounts once linked.
- If you want to stop using your old Hotmail account as an additional inbox, simply remove the link by going back into settings > mail > contacts > calendars > add account type > other > manual setup and deleting the line for your old Hotmail address.
While Hotmail itself hasn’t been around in quite some time, you’re not totally out of luck for accessing your older emails if you don’t know where else to look for them.
By linking your Hotmail account with another email service such as Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Outlook, or iCloud through an IMAP connection you can access all of those archived messages with ease.
What’s more, your old contacts will sync too so you won’t need to worry about finding all of those numbers on your own. One thing to keep in mind is that deleting this link could lead to issues with some apps like Facebook which may require you to sign in with a valid email address.
Overall, linking your old Hotmail account just takes a few minutes and gives you easy access to past conversations without having to hunt down specific files buried deep within the depths of Google Drive.
What happened to my old Hotmail email account?
Microsoft transitioned all Hotmail users to Outlook in 2013, and in 2016, they stopped supporting the old Hotmail interface.

You can use an email client like Outlook Express or Mozilla Thunderbird and enter your old email address and password to access it. The first time you sign in, Outlook will prompt you with a window asking if you want to import messages from this email address into Outlook.

Here’s how to turn off Google Authenticator: If you have multiple Gmail accounts synced together through Google Authenticator, then you might want to remove any unneeded accounts so that every time someone tries to access an account it won’t prompt them for their phone.
You can do this by clicking on Add Account at the bottom of the screen, scrolling down to Remove Accounts, and following the instructions. If you don’t sync your accounts together and only use one account on your phone, then there’s no need to remove anything.
