AirPods Max, an over-ear and cable-free design
The AirPods Max approach the TWS new headphone category in a different way, not only because of the fact that they have a headband design, but also because of the materials used. First of all, they have a breathable knit mesh on top that rests on the wearer’s head.
Apple says the canopy (ornamental fabric) will reduce pressure and distribute the weight of the headphones well. For its part, the frame of the headphones is made of stainless steel for strength and comfort.
To the surprise of many, the AirPods Max do have physical controls, to be precise, they consist of a button accompanied by a digital crown similar to the one used in the Apple Watch Series. From it we can control music playback, answer or reject calls and even activate Siri.
How about the audio?
Well, Apple promises a 40mm dynamic driver developed in-house, which is accompanied by the H1 chip that is also present in your AirPods, so we can already get an idea of what they can do. Additionally, there is a neodymium ring magnetic motor that guarantees a harmonic distortion of less than 1%.
The offer only gets more interesting when considering that the AirPods Max have computational audio (thanks to the H1 Chip) and adaptive equalizer that measures the sound signals and adjusts it according to the headphones and the pads in real time. To top it off, the spatial audio tracks the user’s head to simulate the sound experience offered by 5.1 and 7.1 sound systems.
To put the icing on the cake, the AirPods Max feature active noise cancellation, which is made possible by 3 strategically placed microphones on each earbud. As you might expect, there is also a transparency mode to let the sound pass when the user wants it.
Finally, Apple promises us an autonomy of up to 20 hours using all the functions described above. It is worth mentioning that they are shipped with a smart bag-shaped cover; it serves to carry them easily and makes them enter a state of low energy consumption.
Availability and price
The AirPods Max will go on sale on December 15 in several countries, but there is still no mention. However, we know that they will cost $549 in the United States, which is $453 in exchange, a price that reflects the Premium of these headphones.
